"From my experience of making work for particular commissions I have realised the importance of creating pieces that excite and interest me artistically, as well as being relevant to the environment and the ideas behind the commission.
Alongside making sculpture that is about a particular theme or idea I try to give my work other layers of meaning and expression, taking it away from being purely descriptive. I like the idea of making work that says something both specific and general.
I try to use the tools appropriate to the subject matter and size of the carving, and the ideas I am trying to convey. Surfaces can vary from a rough sawn look to a highly polished finish. The chainsaw is a superb three dimensional drawing tool and I try to use its dynamic form and mark making potential for describing forms.
I am very excited by the possibilities of the tools and materials that I work with and feel that there is huge potential for developing these in the future. " March 2006
